the outdoor classroom

I work in child care.  One big priority I have is to create an outdoor classroom, where children can get involved in the whole planting process.  We have the perfect situation because we have an open air area in the middle of our building that protects the plants from the weather and animals.  We began last year with a pretty awesome garden area.  The kids really enjoyed the whole process, and the most rewarding part of it for me was sending families home with armfuls of fresh vegetables.  I hope to grow our program into a much larger operation, but for now, our garden beds are perfect.  We replaced all of the railroad ties with natural pine and my gardening guru has made sure the soil is nicely mixed with some new Back to Earth compost.  Last year we had some trouble with the soil holding water, so this year should be better.  The three year olds have already dumped some worms into their bed and we will be seed planting tomorrow.  I will definitely update on the process tomorrow and throw some more pictures up.
